"Go Green" This Summer With a Nudist Vacation

Kathy Blanchard of The Naturist Society advocates going nude in order to save money and help the planet at the same time.
“Living more hours naked each day results in a dramatic drop in my laundry, which in turn reduces my water and energy use (along with my related bills),” Ms. Blanchard wrote. “It also reduces the amount of soap I release, in my case, into the Puget Sound.”
She also advocates naturist holidays — staying close to home wherever possible, to cut down on fuel usage — but sometimes traveling to places where it is possible to leave the car behind and backpack or paddle naked into the wild.
“For those few days, we use virtually no fuel, our diet is minimal with low ecological impact, and we return healthier,” she wrote, adding that the “trips are coolly green clothes-free vacations.”
At Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat in Peebles, Ohio, you can save gasoline by "nakationing" close to home, forget about doing laundry, and leave all the stresses and strains of life behind. Swim the way nature intended, hike nude on the well-maintained trails through deep woods and open meadows, enjoy a game of volleyball or horseshoes, or simply relax in the sun and socialize with the friendliest people in southern Ohio.

Cedar Trails opens to non-members on May 1, 2011, so call 937-764-1365 to make arrangements to visit soon. The resort has a number of great events planned this year, from a Memorial Day bash with wine and beer tasting, hot tub party, volleyball match and pancake brunch, a 20th birthday celebration in late June, a special Nude Recreation Weekend gathering in July, all culminated by the Labor Day weekend hog roast.

Whether you are a seasoned nudist or a first-timer, Cedar Trails is the place to be this summer for "going green", and just simply having a wonderful time.

History of Nudism in Modern America

HISTORY OF NUDISM IN MODERN AMERICA

Kissimmee, Fla., -- Early New England settlers -- 16th century Puritans -- with their nonpleasure, morality-enforcing ways were so afraid of nudity, and the lust it could foster, that they refrained from bathing. Long forgotten were the robust ways of the ancient Greeks, who performed feats of strength and skill during the first Olympics, which of course was the earliest documented form of nude recreation.

However, as the colonial era gave way to a free and independent United States of America, "radical thinkers," including Benjamin Franklin, John Quincy Adams and Henry David Thoreau, publicity lauded the benefits in daily naked walks, or as they were called, "air baths." Other nudists of note included President John Quincy Adams, who regularly bathed nude in the Potomac, as did the much beloved fictional characters of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn who skinny-dipped with joy and abandon.

But these so-called radicals continued to remain a very small minority of the population until  the dawn of the 20th century brought more formal nudism to America.

Kurt Barthel, acknowledged as the founder of American nudism, was acquainted with other German nudists late in the 1920s and had allowed his name to be used as a local New York contact. On Labor Day of 1929, Kurt led a small group of individuals to a picnic in the buff in the Hudson Mountains near Peekskill, New York, and organized nude recreation in America was born with his dues-paying club, called the “American League for Physical Culture” (ALPC).

The first official nudist club opened soon after on June 21, 1930, near Spring Valley in Rockland County, New York. By 1931, ALPC had welcomed over 200 new members and moved to an area near Dover, New Jersey.

In October of 1931, Ilsley Boone, the ALPC’s Executive Secretary was asked by Barthel to take his place as leader of the ALPC, in the newly renamed American Sunbathing Association. The ASA grew to nearly 50,000 members throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. One last name change occurred in 1995 when the ASA became the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) – to better reflect the activities of its membership.

Boone’s concept of the nudist lifestyle was that “a nudist is one who believes and practices that one may freely go without clothes unless for some specific reason -- such as bodily comfort or social requirements -- it is essential to wear them. This definition contemplates that there is nothing shameful in nakedness per se; that there is no need for discrimination between the several parts of the body as regards their respectability and acceptability; that for many forms of outdoor and indoor work, for outdoor sports, for swimming, possibly for life within the home, nudism offers a much more wholesome and healthy way of life than does clothed society. Nudists do not advocate a clothesless social order in the twentieth century, though such an eventuality is not
inconceivable.”

After 80 years, nude recreation continues to grow as more people choose clothes-free and clothing optional Nakations. Today, AANR is the credible voice of reason on issues relevant to nude recreation and Nakationing in appropriate settings, serving more than 213,000 individuals who enjoy clothes-free and clothing-optional recreation throughout North America. Download the new AANR iPhone application found in the Lifestyle category of the iTunes App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aanrmobile or on the AANR website at http://www.aanr.com, and join the AANR community on Facebook. For further information on nude recreation and the association’s affiliated clubs, contact AANR at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or visit the association’s website at www.aanr.com.

Top Ten Reasons to Try Nudism

Actually there are at least 205 compelling reasons to shed your clothes, which can be found in the Naturist Society's document "205 Arguments and Observations in Support of Naturism".

But for the sake of brevity, let's whittle it down to ten:

1. The human body is demystified.
Often, we feel intrigued about naked bodies because they are hidden. However, sometimes we fail to understand that human body is not something so secretive that we can only look at it with immense curiosity, and sometimes even a sense of guilt. Being a nudist will familiarize us with naked bodies, allowing us to understand that they are not taboos.

2. An individual will feel more comfortable in her own skin.
Although being comfortable in one's own skin seems to be a cliche, being a nudist will help us feel more at ease when facing our own body. Under the influence of media, we tend to be overly critical of our body and we try to hide our physical "flaws" with clothes. As such, being a nudist will give us an opportunity to accept our body as it is.

3. Skinny dipping is more fun!
Swimming nude is simply more fun because water feels better on bare skin than on a layer of tight swimsuit.

4. Sleeping nude helps maintain desirable body temperature.
Sleeping without clothes will allow our body to evenly distribute heat. Without clothes, sleeping in summer is going to be so much cooler.

5. Being nude will help save time.
Since you are not going to wear any clothes, you no longer need to spend time wondering how you should put together a presentable outfit.

6. Nudism promotes social equality.
Without clothes, there is fewer barrier that will distinguish people of different social status, age, and body shape. In fact, many nudists state that they feel more united with other people as less judgment is imposed.

7. Nudist events are fun!
Naturist groups often organize nudist sports events, such as hiking, horseback-riding, and swimming in the beach. Without the constraint of clothes, we can all have fun in nature.

8. Sun bathing nude will eliminate awkward tan lines.
There is no clothing to create an uneven tanning effect!

9. Less hassle for laundry.
Being a nudist automatically lessen or completely eliminate your laundry load.

10. Enjoy the freedom at a nudist resort.
Most nudist resorts are located near a beach. Not only can you enjoy the freedom of being nude, you can also relax with the calming ocean and sand. [source]

So c'mon and have fun in the nude at Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat in Peebles, Ohio, and save gasoline by "nakationing" close to home! We open to non-members on May 1, so call 937-764-1365 to plan your trip today!

Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat in Ohio Celebrates 20 Years of Nude Recreation

Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat in Peebles, Ohio, is celebrating its 20th year of nude recreation by offering a series of special events, including an anniversary party on June 25 with a video retrospective, the opening of a time capsule, and plenty of music and other entertainment. Many other events are planned throughout the season, such as tournaments, parties, games, dinners and more, culminating with the Labor Day Hog Roast.

On July 9, Cedar Trails will observe Nude Recreation Week in coordination with other nudist clubs nationwide by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the number of people to simultaneously hula-hoop. Cedar Trails is offering free admission for first-time nudists between 2 and 4 PM, with half-price for the remainder of the day.

The campground opened officially in 1991 and shortly thereafter received its charter with The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), which states that “all clubs are expected to adhere to AANR’s principles and standards, honed from 79 years of experience. Our clubs foster a wholesome, nurturing environment for members and their families.”

Over the past 20 years, Cedar Trails has added many amenities, such as a heated swimming pool, covered events pavilion with pool table and other games, hot tub, rental cabins, 30 amp RV hookups, modern bathhouse, a fishing pond,  food service, volleyball, petanque, horseshoes and badminton courts, and much more. The club prides itself on its well maintained hiking paths, which cover nearly 5 miles through woods and fields, with a panoramic view of the Adams County meteor crater.

Cedar Trails was a dream for owners Fred and Jo Anne Roessler, who live on the grounds and earn their living by running the facility. “It’s basically like any other campground with standards better than a state park, except that the people here are nude,” Fred says. Cedar Trails offers the rustic beauty of a back-to-nature experience with the modern comforts of home.

With a hundred members and hundreds more visitors each year, Cedar Trails represents the fun, magic and simplicity of the nudist experience, showing why nude recreation is becoming one of the most popular trends of our time.

Whether you are an experienced nudist or naturist, a novice, or just thinking about trying social nudism, then Cedar Trails is the place to be. The campground is not clothing optional, so people are expected to be nude, but the club is understanding of first-timers who might need a little time to adapt to clothes-freedom. But for most people it only takes 10 minutes to shed the clothes and join in the fun and freedom of being nude in natural surroundings.

Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat opens on May 1 to non-members, so be sure to call now to make your reservation to visit. Come join us for a summer of fun, and help us celebrate our 20th birthday in your birthday suit!
